Help open a world of literature and share the love of reading with a child. By becoming a literacy tutor, you will support a student once a week for an hour in the skills of reading and writing. The gift of your time and commitment is an everlasting gift to a child. The shared experience between the student and the literacy tutor is a powerful influence on the child's perception of himself and the world. A feeling of confidence builds in both the tutor and child as the road of literacy leads them to new adventures together.

If you are interested in becoming a literacy tutor, please read on to find out how. The tutoring program is open to individuals of all ages and requires no prior teaching or tutoring experience. The training for the tutoring program is taught by the Volunteer Coordinator, Maggie Kraft, who specializes in the field of reading. Being a Reading Specialist gives Maggie the expertise and experience to provide a comprehensive training for the literacy tutors. The literacy volunteers complete a 9-12 hour training course before they are matched up with a student. The tutor then chooses the school of their choice (Madison Heights, Madison Camelview, Madison Simis or Madison Rose Lane) to work with a student one hour each week throughout the school year. Each month the tutors receive continued training and guidance at monthly support meetings.

This tutoring program is supported by the Madison School District and OASIS. OASIS is a non-profit organization that partners with school districts to support adult community members and students needing literacy tutoring. OASIS supplies training materials, story books, tutoring bags and organizational support to the Madison School District. The Madison District and OASIS partnership has made a powerful impact on many students' and tutors' lives.
